What is Salt Therapy? Back to top

Salt Therapy is breathing in salty air for therapeutic benefits.  It is a common, natural treatment in eastern and central Europe but almost unknown elsewhere. It is based on the principle that exposure to the microclimate inside a natural salt mine/cave can play an important role in the relief of many health problems, particularly respiratory and skin conditions.

Our Salt Clinic delivers salt therapy in a especially designed room, where the microclimate of a natural salt mine/cave is replicated using a saline dispensing unit.  This unit releases negatively ionized dry aerosol micro particles of salt into the room.

How is salt therapy controlled?Back to top

Dry sodium chloride aerosol containing particles of 1-10 micrometers in size are produced and infused into the room by a halo generator. The halo generator is programmed to infuse a particular dosage of salt particles into the room. We can also change the machine settings depending on the needs of the patient.  Rooms are ventilated for 30 minutes and fresh filtered air is supplied after each session.

What happens during a session? Back to top

During sessions, our machine grinds pharmaceutical salt to a fine dust that is then dispersed into the room for you to inhale. You just sit back and relax in our tranquil salt room whilst listening to ambient music with low level mood lighting.  You are free to read although be advised the room  has dim lighting for the purposes of relaxation.

How long does a session last? Back to top

Sessions last for 60 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes before your initial session to complete the confidential consultation form.

What should I wear? Back to top

We advise you to wear light coloured casual clothing, as the fine salt particles may show up on dark clothing.  It does, however, just brush off your clothes.  It is not necessary to wear gym clothes or bring a change of clothing for afterwards.  You will be offered shoe covers to keep the salt on the floor sterile and clean.

Am I going to feel anything? Back to top

You will feel deeply relaxed and rejuvenated!  Just sit back and breathe naturally in the tranquil environment. You may feel the salt tickle your throat, eyes and nose as it clears the mucus.  Some may also get a slight taste of salt on their lips

How does Salt therapy alleviate allergies? Back to top

Salt is believed to be naturally anti-histaminic.  Anti-histamines are important in combating the body’s immune response to allergens.  Also, the micro particles of salt reach into every area in the lungs and help destroy bacteria.  Sodium chloride has been shown to stimulate production of macrophages which eat bacteria and cellular debris. It has also been shown to improve the viscosity or flow of mucus, which is helpful in expelling allergens and pathogens from the airways

Is there an age restriction? Back to top

Salt Therapy is available to people of all ages.  For the children, we have separate clinic times, during which we provide toys and books, where they can be happily entertained and are innocently unaware they are receiving a treatment.

Salt Therapy is a 100% drug free treatment with no artificial elements.  The treatment is suitable for children from the age of 6 months onwards.

How safe is Salt Therapy? Back to top

Salt Therapy is 100% natural, safe and drug-free.  It provides effective long-term relief from various respiratory illnesses.  It can be used as a complementary treatment or as a sole treatment.

Is taking too much salt into the body not bad for you? Back to top

As a result of eating too much salt we can develop hypertension or high blood pressure, which increases the risk of Cardiac Arrest and Strokes. With Salt Therapy, however, the medical grade salt affects your respiratory system and not your stomach, heart or kidneys. Also, the concentration of salt is much less than that of our daily recommended allowance 0.5-10 mg/m3 (milligrams per cubic meter), compared to 6.0g (grams). Therefore, the amount of Salt entering your respiratory system is extremely low. Salt entering the respiratory system kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, opens passageways and loosens mucus.

However, we do not recommend the use of our salt room to anyone with type IIB hypertension.
